The combination of a wooden mallet and a bowl creates sounds and vibrations that have great benefit and power.

Healing bowls are alloys of several metals that combine with the energies (chakras) of our body, as well as cosmic bodies. There are seven of them together and they are connected to seven mantra syllables . A beautiful realization is the fact that each of the seven metals sounds different and they come together in a unique harmony.

Being a novice in the practice of singing a bowl can seem challenging at first, because the available information about the bows is unbelievable everywhere. But there is no need to worry at all. When the pressure or speed of hitting the bowl with the mallet changes, we also have the power to change its sound and vibration. Maintaining the same pressure and speed leads to resonance, which is a note we can hear even after a player stops playing the bowl.

If we decide to use a singing bowl, the basis is its choice. You can read about the selection in our article how to choose a Tibetan singing bowl (will be soon). It is ideal to play on smaller bowls with smaller mallets and, conversely, to use larger mallets in the case of larger bowls. Before getting carried away into the world of the unique vibrations of the Tibetan bowl, make sure that you have found a peaceful place where you will feel comfortable and relaxed.

2 BASIC TECHNIQUES HOW TO PLAY ON TIBETAN SOUND BOWLS

Before playing the singing bowl, take a pleasant sitting-like position. Make sure you feel relaxed, have a straight spine and retain your natural breath.

There are several methods and techniques of playing in Tibetan bowls, and each of them has healing powers. If the singing bowls are something new and unknown to you, choose one of the basic techniques recommended for beginners:

  • The first way a beginner can dissipate the vibrations of his bowl is by hitting the side of the bowl with a mallet. If your mallet is on one side with a padding, its sides can be alternated when hitting. This changes the high and softer sound. Be careful not to hit too hard. The bowl could break or fall. It is for this reason that a pillow or pad is used under the bowl to strengthen the bowl. You can use your non-dominant hand to stabilize it, but you need to pay attention to rings or bracelets and watches on your hands. It is ideal to put them down from your hand while holding the bowl. The bowl should be placed in the palm of your hand.

Hold the mallet and lightly hit the bowl with the thicker (filled) side of the mallet against the middle outer wall of the bowl. Hit the bowl and allow the sound and vibration to subside completely before the next blow.

  • The second way to play a Tibetan bowl, which is proven for beginners, is edging . This technique may seem a bit more challenging, but it is playfully manageable. Hold the mallet vertically downwards. When holding vertically, it is important to find the holding method that is most comfortable for you. The tip for gripping the mallet is to hold it at an angle, as if you were writing with a pen, while for others it is comfortable to grip the mallet with all five fingers, as if mixing something in a pot. To begin this technique, start with a light blow to the bowl on its middle outer wall to warm the bowl before its vibrations begin to dissipate.

Be patient. During the first movements, the bowl does not have to start spreading sounds and vibrations immediately. When the undertone is created, you can gradually slow down and make a firmer contact between the mallet and the edge. Gradually apply pressure with even movements and slide the mallet clockwise around the edge of the bowl. Set your pace and don't rush too much. Give the sound room to create over time, not all at once. Soon a beautiful and calm sound will be heard all around and inside you. As you continue, the sound will sound clear. It is important to keep applying pressure, as the friction between the mallet and the bowl creates vibrations that lead to singing.

Don't be too strict with yourself. Everything takes time, and so is the singing bowl game. The first games may not be exactly as you imagined. Gradually, however, you will get into a unique harmony with your Tibetan bowl, which will warm your interior with its tones and vibrations.
